Residence Hall Association Students Earn National Award

University of Northern Colorado's Housing & Residence Life has been named the sole recipient of the Commitment to Diversity Award by the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, an organization of more than 400 institutions from the United States, Canada, Mexico and Australia.

The award, presented at the organization's national conference May 16-18 at Oklahoma State University, recognizes UNC's student-directed diversity awareness and education programming and the university's commitment to diversity. Finalists for the award were the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Seattle University, St. John Fisher College, University of North Texas, University of Florida, University of Akron and Creighton University.

A group of UNC Residence Hall Association students, led by senior Sara Valencich, prepared the 40-page report that advanced to the national conference after being selected as the top project at the regional conference earlier this spring. The report documents 2007-08 university diversity initiatives and highlights yearlong academic and event programming offered by campus groups and individuals including Student Activities, Housing and Residence Life, the cultural centers and faculty and staff. Letters of support in the document included a commendation from Gov. Bill Ritter. Click here to view the Commitment to Diversity bid.

Welcome Crew Volunteers Needed

Yes, it is still springtime, but we are already looking forward to next fall!  In order for Hall Move-In to continue to be as successful as it has been, we’ll need some energetic, helpful, friendly people who are serious about helping incoming new students AND their returning fellow students!  In other words...WE NEED SOME Crew Volunteers!

What’s a crew volunteer you ask?  A CREW Volunteer is a UNC student, faculty member or alumni  who volunteers to help move new students into the residence halls. Crew Volunteers greet students and parents, help unload cars, answer questions, and generally provide a helping hand.  Your help is needed!

We cannot emphasize enough the value of having you be a part of this effort.  Many positive comments are received each year about how smooth hall move-in went for them and that is a direct result of the assistance our volunteers provide. Students and parents continually express how impressed and appreciative they are to have members of the UNC student body and faculty/staff greeting them as they arrive on campus.

Our student Crew volunteers can also choose to continue to offer assistance to new students through out the weekend by helping hall staff facilitate activities prior to classes starting, giving tours, showing students how to buy their books, and taking new students to Bear Welcome programs.  They work with the staff and hall/floor governments to ensure a smooth transition for new students, and helping build a healthy campus community. For these opportunities you will be directed to work with your RA or Hall Director.

To volunteer you will commit to:

  • Attend a one-hour training session on Wednesday, August 20th @ 5pm in the Harrison Den
  • At least one ½ day of move-in help (4 hours)

If you would like to volunteer or need more information, please contact Nate Cole, Assistant Director of Residence Life, at nate.cole@unco.edu.
