Academic Services

Mission of Housing & Residence Life

We provide exceptional facilities and a caring staff who create an environment where students become responsible members of their community. We promote academic excellence, respect for individual differences and engage students in the life of the university.

Student Learning

The Department of Housing & Residence Life maintains its buildings and builds its programs and services to help students achieve their educational goals. We believe that students need comfortable, safe spaces in order to reach the high expectations faculty have for students. This is why academic resources are brought into the halls, and why you will see bulletin boards and programs on academic success held wherever you live on campus. Below are some highlights of the services we provide to help you achieve success in your academics.

The Den

The Den is located in Harrison Hall. With student artwork adorning the walls, comfortable couches and chairs, and modern lamps and tapestries, this study space is almost as comfortable as your room! The Den is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for your convenience. There are many reasons that The Den is students’ first choice for studying, for all of the following reasons:Study table in The Den

  • Wireless internet
  • Open 24/7
  • Evening Tutoring, provided by the Office of Academic Support and Advising
  • Study space for individual quiet study and small group study
  • Student art gallery
  • Resources to help students identify academic support services on campus
  • Occasional academically focused programs to assist with student success

Residential Learning Communities (RLCs)

The Department of Housing & Residence Life offers 10 RLCs formed around specific majors or interests, and an additional 3 Theme communities. Students who live in these environments find it easy to form study groups, meet other students that will be in their same classes, and meet faculty within their major or interest area. For more information on our RLCs, please visit our Residential Learning Community website.

Faculty ConnectionsFaculty and Students

Each Residence Hall has a group of faculty that will occasionally come to the halls to put on programs to help students be successful academically, and to just meet students and have fun with interesting programs or day-trips. Research shows that the more meaningful connections students have with faculty, the more likely they are to rate their college experience highly and graduate. If you have a faculty member you’d like to come to your hall, please contact Jenna Finley, Director of Residence Life, at 351-2651 or jenna.finley@unco.edu.

Academic Recognition Reception

Each year students living on campus who earn a 3.0 GPA or higher in the fall semester are invited to our annual Academic Recognition Reception. This is a celebration of students’ hard work and dedication to their studies. Each student is invited to nominate a faculty member for an award, and these awards are cherished by faculty in every department at Northern Colorado. Study hard, and hopefully we’ll see you at this event next Spring!
